Wednesday Words - The Universe

Have you heard of Notes from the Universe? It's a free sign up to receive emails from the Universe. The website says - The Notes are brief emails written by "The Universe," personalized with your name (and occasionally your goals and dreams), designed to remind you that you have, indeed, been given dominion over all things. These emails always put a smile on my face. I typically read them first thing in the morning before getting out of bed for a little motivation for the day.

I'm not a religious person and I'm not sure if I'm a spiritual person but I like the idea of The Universe hooking me up when it sees fit. Not that I am one of those people who is all Put it into the Universe and it'll happen because I'm totally not. I'm not knocking folks for believing such things but I need a bit more than hope to help me reach a goal. Like for instance, asking the Universe for a good man or a good job is not something I would do. It reminds me of folks who ask their God for the same. God and the Universe IMO will not do these things for you. YOU have to do these things for yourself. Again, I'm not in any way knocking people's beliefs, if anything, I am always curious about other folks beliefs because it teaches me new things and the conversations are typically interesting to me.

Sometimes the emails are short and to the point but sometimes there are a few paragraphs. I swear sometimes I feel like the Universe slapped me in the face with its words because they are so on point with what is going on in my life.

In 1989, 2 brothers (Mike and Andy) and their cool mom (Sheelagh), launched TUT (then it stood for "Totally Unique T-shirts," now it stands for "The Universe Talks") and started selling t-shirts and souvenirs to tourists out of a pushcart in Orlando, Florida, with no idea of where it was actually headed. 11 years later, in the year 2000, after selling 1 million "Totally Unique T-shirts" through a small chain of stores and international distributors, we closed operations and launched TUT, a philosophical club for understanding and living the adventure of life. We started sending out "Monday Morning Motivators" (inspirational poems taken from our bestselling t-shirts) to the email addresses we had collected from visitors to the retail stores. These weekly emails soon became daily emails, which finally evolved into Notes from the Universe — short and humorous reminders of life’s magic and our power that are sent out to 700,000 people around the world and are still the mainstay of all we do.The most inspiring part of our story was discovering that by setting ourselves into motion, toward the realization of our dreams, we also set into motion the entire "Universe" and all of its wisdom, which then, and only then, could conspire on our behalf, even taking us "off course" at times to avail us of treasures and rewards beyond our greatest expectations.

Some of the praises for this email subscription come from folks that you might know like Jason Mraz, Christina Perri and Rhonda Byrne. Jason says it reminds him he's a part of something much bigger. Christina says she looks forward to her emails every morning and that it helps start her day humbled and hopeful. Rhonda says these emails have charged her day with absolute joy, more times than she can remember.

Weekend Snapshots | 32

Today's #WeekendSnapshots 32 is brought to you by Remidog laying on the guest bed also known as GranMama Carrizo's bed. She won't be happy about it but Remidog obviously gives no eff's so whatever. Speaking of no eff's and being a badass.. don't forget to enter to win a t-shirt & cute cloth bag from Sewbonita right here! The giveaway ends soon but you can still use houstonbonita for 10% OFF your first purchase! Annnnnnd, #ThePaperFiles August giveaway with Jihane is almost over, too, go see!

SATURDAY |  La Vaquita, crema Mexicana (Pasteurized Mexican style cream) has been very present in my life these days. I like to put it on my tacos and flautas... two delicious plates I have pretty often. 😂  Someone told me they put it on white rice and I was shocked that my love for white rice had not led me to this discovery sooner. Sunday night's flautas at home confirmed it! It is indeed delicious & you should try it! 😋

I went to the mall this weekend for something other than LUSH (I still stopped there, though, LOL). It's rare for me because I'm a huge online shopper and small boutique type store shopper... but eh, Tout Suite opened up a bit ago and I was interested in checking it out. The first one is quite a drive for me so this was quite convenient. I honestly wasn't sure what to try so I went with the Club and fries. Not the best shot but I was hungry so it needed to be fast. Something else I tried was their sweet milk tea and it was very tasty! So tasty I went and bought the ingredients for it Sunday 😛  Oh, I also bought two macarons as dessert! No clue what they're called but one of those was supposed to be fruity pebbles. There were lots of folks in line so I passed on changing it because I knew they would be heaven no matter what. And you know what? It totally was. 😍  I ran some other errands and headed home since it's been rainy and just crappy in the H these days.

SUNDAY |  I have a few art prints in a closet at Casa de Reed that I haven't framed. I'm not good with picking picture frames. Usually, I go with the basics, black border. I don't look into different colored frames because I typically don't know where the print will end up. I bought a 4-pk of these black frames and put some prints in them. The Texas prints have been in the closet for a few months whereas the Jermaine Rogers piece was purchased on Friday at Space Montrose. I've been following him on Facebook for a while so it was a nice surprise to see his art in a store I adore. I'm not 100% sure the frame choice I made for these is good but it'll do for now. At least this way I can put them up & I can see them every day!

So, like I said above, I looked up a recipe (thanks, Cuppoa Cocoa!) for the sweet milk tea and hooked myself UP after a visit to the grocery store. Annnnnnnd, I made some badass chicken flautas with vaquita (cheese), avocados, white rice and charros (beans). Charros, ya'll! See picture below!!! It was one of the most amazing homemade meals I've ever made which haven't really been too many. 😒  I was am so proud of myself . The discovery of how easy they are to make with the ready-to-grub chickens at the grocery store changed my life. What? You didn't think I baked the chicken and shit, right? 😂

IKEA magazine arrived and I've already started bookmarking shit and adding it to my wishlist. I really want a new living room set... these damn #reedtasticpups never let us have nice things. Speaking of those mutts, I used the LUSH Cosmetic Warrier for the first time Sunday. Finnashit was very concerned and wanted to lick my face so badly. Ingredients consist of fresh garlic and fresh free range eggs but I swear it smells like Tea Tree oil, which is also an ingredient. Don't let the garlic freak you out, though. I read the title of an article once that said it was good for breakouts 😂

DON'T FORGET: #ThePaperFiles & Sewbonita giveaways end soon!

Sponsored | Chingona by SewBonita+Giveaway

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post in collaboration with SewBonita.
All opinions are my own.

I'm not Mexican. People confuse me for it all the time. It's probably more or so because I speak Spanish than it is for being infatuated with the Mexican culture. I speak Spanish with an Argentinian accent when I'm with my family. It rarely comes out when I'm with other Latino's. What does come out with other Latino's is my Mexican accent which makes total sense since those are the folks I was raised with whether it be school or friends of the family. As mentioned before, I'm in love with the Mexican culture. The people, the food, all the brilliant colors, etc. which is why when Elena Flores from Sewbonita.com hit me up for a collaboration, I couldn't say no. I mean, this Chingona shirt is the best shit since Bluebell ice cream returned to the market. 😂

Chingona: (n. female) [Mexican]

  • A formidable woman with whom others are smart enough not to f**k with.
  • A bad-ass female.
  • A term used to describe a self-respecting woman who knows she’s got it going on.
Alright so let's get something clear before we move on. You do not have to be Mexican or even of Latin descent in order to be a Chingona. Chingona's are all over the world, speaking all sorts of languages, and empowering themselves and other ladies around them! Look at our fantastical US Olympics women gymnastics team. They are all freaking Chingona's and we couldn't be prouder of them and how they are helping empower the younger generation in the sense of You can do anything you put your mind to.

To name a few Chingona's from around the world that you've probably heard of... Frida Kahlo, Michelle Obama, Selma Hayek, Rhonda Rousey, Malala Yousafzai, even a fictional one like Daenerys Targaryen, and so many freaking more. These are women who do not shy away from their beliefs. The true definition of Chingona!

Today’s #ThePaperFiles is brought to you by ice cream and cupcakes. This month I teamed up with Jihane from OnixJ Healthy Living to bring you another paper good giveaway. Now I know it seems weird to have ice cream & cupcakes next to healthy living but cheat meals are the best meals so just roll with it. 😂

I asked Jihane, a super paperhead, to join me in last month's paper giveaway but see what had happened was... July was a busy month for the both of us. 😩 We didn't get our purchases done until the last week and instead of rushing it, we decided to do it in August. Let me tell you a bit about Jihane.. To quote her blog she is a British-Latina, healthy food enthusiast, wine lover, amateur photographer, mother, bilingual, bi-cultural, vegetarian-ish, tree hugger. She's also one of the co-founders of the Houston Latina Bloggers with me and Connie. We met years ago at a blogger conference and the three of us just clicked. We've been on a mission to bring a Latina group together and we finally accomplished it last year in October. Jihane also has a kiddo named Sean who not only is super freaking bright & awesome, he loves Legos! Oh, speaking of Legos. If you're not already following, check out Jihane's Lego Photography Facebook page. The images are great and the captions will make you giggle! Follow Jihane on FB, Twitter, and Instagram.

Sponsored | JORD Wrist Watch + Giveaway

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you've been a follower/reader of mine for some time, you know I'm a big-cheese-type of smiler 😁 Mama Carrizo is the same! She doesn't spend any of her time being upset or down and out because she's a hustler and she goes after what she wants. In June, Mama Carrizo turned 69 and although some ladies don't like to talk about age, Mama Carrizo is proud of how she's spent her time in those 69 years. If you know her in person, you're probably surprised that she's 69 because the lady never stays still. She spends her time working two jobs (gasp, right?), sleeping on a super crazy schedule, and enjoying some hilarious moments with her two daughters. Time has definitely been on her side and so has happiness.

Weekend Snapshots | 31

Today's #WeekendSnapshots 31 is brought to you by Bolthouse Farms 1915 organic cold-pressed drinks. No, this is not an ad or a sponsored post. I actually heard about these from OnixJ. Check out her review here and look for some at your local grocery store. I wasn't looking for them because I didn't think the grocery store I was at would have them. But then while looking for some organic veggies, I saw the bottles. I bought two to check them out and so far I'm enjoying them. Except the grapefruit in this one is a bit too much for me...

SATURDAY |  I've been going to sleep too late during the week and not sleeping all the way through the night so this weekend was a good for me to recharge my batteries. I started reading a book that a friend recommended called American Gods (affiliate) by Neil Gaiman. It'll be out as a TV series soon so I wanted to read about it first. See the trailer below.

I met my sister at Jerry Built burgers for her first visit. If you're in Houston, I totally recommend them. The service is really great and so is the food. My obsession is their fries and their Blueberry Lemonade. No picture of the grub because we were too hungry. 😂 Saturday was my big girl, Jayla's, 10th birthday. She celebrated the same way she has the last couple of years... sleeping with no eff's given 😂 Something new in Casa de Reed since Jay has gotten older is a dog gate between our Kitchen and the rest of the house. The reason for this is because she can't hold her bladder the same way as her younger butt used to. So to keep the wood floors in good shape and make it easier on me for cleaning, we bought a gate. She doesn't seem to give a crap about it. She's got her bed in the Kitchen, water bowl and the floor stays nice and cool. The kids that are having a hard time adjusting are the boys. They love to be in the mix at all times and can no longer do that. They'll get over it!

SUNDAY | Aside from doing some reading, I'm also catching up on some good shows. I finally caught up to season two of Mr. Robot and trying to finish season two of Ray Donovan so I can catch up already. Both are really good shows that I definitely recommend. Mr. Robot's first season took me by surprise. A lot of things were not as they seemed, unlike Ray Donovan where everything is expected. I left the casa once to get the kiddos some food and to get me some food. I edited some pictures for this week's post (stay tuned for two giveaways this week) and continued to recharge my batteries!
