Home Purchasing: What I've learned so far

We've been looking for a house to purchase for a little over a week now. As you know, we almost bought a house but backed out due to not feeling very confident about the builder. We moved on and placed a bid on a lovely house this past Sunday. More shadyness happened and last night we decided to get out before we got screwed. -enter sad face here-

Here's what I've learned about the bullshit that comes with searching for a home..

  • Home listing photos lie. That backyard isn't as big as you think.
  • Ask for proof if it was recently replaced. Ex: AC, roof, foundation, etc.
  • Don't assume that the price on the listing is what the house will appraise for.
  • Don't act desperate, it gives them leverage over you.
  • Consider your daily commute before going out to see a house.
  • Be picky but not too picky.
  • Find out what HOA/Maintenance fees are.
  • Find out what your property taxes will be.
  • Watch out for haters. The folks that want the best for you but hate on your decision to buy said house.
  • Ask your realtor a lot of questions.
  • Make decisions as fast as is reasonably possible.
  • Don't apply for new credit, buy a car or change jobs.
  • Start your search early.
  • Stay current on all of your accounts.
  • Get a realtor you like & can trust. This process might take a while.
  • Be prepared to play games with Sellers & their Realtors. A lot of games.

And most importantly, don't let this process stress you out. You want to throw positivity in the air so that good things come your way. Getting into an argument with your spouse because you were to eager to get the house or didn't show enough excitement is just not worth it. You'll buy a house and it might not be the perfect house for you.. but it doesn't have to be your first and last house. It would be nice if it was like that because no one really likes to move.. but chances are you'll end up moving at some point.

We haven't reached the 10 day option period on a house just yet.. so I'm sure there's much more for me to learn. I'll keep ya posted :) Wish us luck!

Weekend Snapshots

The weekend started with puppies. Can't go wrong there now can we? The two furkids above are my sisters grandpuppies.. Her youngest furkid had three puppies and these two are the little girls. I call them Cry Baby & Tiny Baby, haha! I don't have to tell you how ridiculously delicious the puppy breath was right?! Didn't think so.

This weekend was my sisters birthday, 21 years old (I kid lol). We celebrated by doing what we do best, grubbing! We hit up Salt Grass and went all out. Steaks, artichoke dip and tropical sangrias. We ladies do not play! We take birthday dinners seriously in my family, haha!

E & I also looked at more casas on Sunday. Multiple casas down and we've already picked a winner. More on that once it all clears up a bit.

Come on August, you're killing me..

I thought we were in the clear. I thought we had made a great decision. I thought we were on our way to starting a new adventure.. the Reed Family that is. But I was wrong...

We decided to back out of purchasing our new home. There were some things we weren't fully convinced about and some things that made no sense what so ever. The major thing we weren't happy with was the fact that the homes in the neighborhood we were going to buy in, hardly keep their value. That's a huge no no for us. We can't afford to buy this house and then lose in the long run. Making the decision to continue with that purchase could have potentially ruined us. We weren't willing to take any chances so we decided to keep looking.

It's a tough decision for us. We really liked the house and were ecstatic to move. After talking to E's coworker attorneys and our Realtor, we knew we had to pass on that house. So back to the drawing board we go.. back to the stress and frustration of searching for a home and bidding on it before anyone else does..

August has been tough.. really tough but we will pull through. We will make this home buying business our bitch and find the perfect home for us. This is your heads up.. I won't be online as much as I'd like ->FB, IG, this blog<- due to packing, searching and oh there's that one thing that a lot of you have... a job! LOL! Lots going on but I will try my best to keep folks updated as much as I can.

Mucho thanks for all the well wishes! We cannot express how grateful we are to have such supporting friends & family! <3

Weekend Snapshots

The feels for this weekend were intense. As you can see above, E & I bought our first home. Still lots to sort out.. its a lot of ppwk when you sign your soul away, yanno LOL! I can't begin to tell you how excitamated I am and freaking scared too. This is HUGE commitment and up until a week ago, we weren't even thinking of buying. We've been on a search for a house to rent but since no one wants our big kids.. the search was getting really frustrating. We decided to check out these builders, with no expectations, that my mom told us about. We met with them on Saturday and weren't too impressed. Our visit was short but we made an appt for the next day, Sunday to check out the models. We ended up getting a house we hadn't even thought of looking on a corner lot with a big backyard for our kids. The experience so far has been great.. and I'm sure they'll be hiccups along the way but we'll deal with them as they come.. cause that's what adults do, right?! ;)

So yeah, we bought our first home and that picture is us struggling to stake our sold sign on the ground LOL Reed Casa won't be complete till the end of September so that gives us enough time to get the rest of our ducks in a row :)

I am still reading #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso, the owner of Nasty Gal.  I've been reading it in bed before I fall asleep. I kind of like doing this because I go to sleep with her words in my head. Makes my dreams go a little wild with ideas. I'm enjoying how honest and helpful she is in trying to make us GIRLBOSSES!!

I put together six of her quotes that I'm really feeling and I hope will help you a bit. I definitely recommend this book to folks who are stuck in a rut. A rut in the sense of.. you don't like your job and you're just very unhappy with the road you're on.

Rest in Peace Funny Man

Robin Williams (1951–2014)

“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” - Dead Poets Society

I'm an 80's baby which means I grew up watching Robin Williams. He was a big deal in my childhood. Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook, Jumanji, Jack... ahh the list goes on to my adulthood where I was still fascinated with this man. He played your best friend or your brother.. a teacher and a doctor. He was an actor who was so convincing that even when he did the voice of Fender in Robots or the Genie in Aladdin, you freaking believed it.
"To live... to live would be an awfully big adventure." - Hook (1991)
E & I recently watched One Hour Photo for the first time and boy was it creepy. He was so good that you believed he was a psycho ready to take a family out. You always believed who he was portraying. His comedy stand up was even better than the movies. He was allowed to be himself.. to talk shit and make you laugh at the same time... He was more of that famous friend we all had rather than a celebrity we'd never met..
"Crying never helped anybody do anything, okay? You have a problem, you face it like a man." - Jumanji
When I heard the news yesterday I was shocked.. like most of you. I was sad.. totally heartbroken to see one of my favorite comedians take his own life. Death is sad in itself but when it involves a suicide, it becomes even sadder in my book. I can't imagine the things he was going through that would make him want to take his own life. The demons he must have had that he just couldn't get rid of. It saddens me that he felt like his only choice was death.
"You have to break in half to love somebody" - What Dreams May Come
We hardly ever talk about mental health. Its not a big deal and it should be. It affects so many Americans daily and if we could stop avoiding it.. there's a chance we could save so many lives. We have to stop sweeping it under a rug as if people will "get over it" like a teenage phase. It affects families and makes people unstable that then make rash decisions. We have an issue and the sooner we tackle it, the sooner we'll have healthier people wanting to live.

Rest in Peace Funny Man. You made this world a brighter place and I wish there was something we all could have done for you to make it better. Thank you for the wonderful laughs and overall being a great man that cared about the people. You will never be forgotten and will live on forever in the work you made for your fans. We will miss you! My heart goes out to your family and friends. <3
“Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day, make a wish, and think of me. Make your life spectacular.” - Jack

Weekend Snapshots

Whataburger turned 64 on Friday and I couldn't make it to help celebrate LOL! I went Saturday instead.. so it was a belated birthday celebration! Whataburger has the best ketchup and the best burger for the price! I love me some other places, but my love for Whataburger will never be replaced. Ok, let me stop..

I started reading another book last night. My Goodreads Challenge is looking pretty dead lately. I haven't been reading as much as I'd like. I've been a bit stressed out with work and the house hunt. I'm trying to catch up but my time is limited after work. Not to mention it takes me about an hour to get home. smh. Speaking of home, I looked at a couple more casas this weekend. At first it was like this.. I liked a house but when I applied I was turned down due to an application being submitted before mine. I found a great house on Saturday, house was fantastic for my family.. except, the Homeowners didn't want three dogs.. two were okay, but not three. Sigh. The search continues today..

Friday Love 08.08.14 | 10 Pins

I've been neglecting my Pinterest. I think what happened was... One of my pins was flagged a while back and now I feel jaded about it. It made me feel a little sad for re-pinning something (not from original pinner) that the owner didn't want on Pinterest. If there was something I didn't want on there and someone pinned it, I'd be pretty upset about it so I understand. I also feel kind of weird about the whole situation because once you put something on the internet, it seems to be fair game. Then again, it's all fun and games until you get sued. Anyways, if I pin something on Pinterest or share it on my blog and you are the owner, please let me know and I'll remove it. No need to get me in trouble with the Pinterest Police. :) Happy Friday everyone!

Pura Vida Bracelets from Costa Rica :)

A week or two ago I became a Pura Vida Rep. :) What is Pura Vida you ask? It means Pure Life in Spanish. Pura Vida sells a number of things, bracelets being their more popular item. As a rep, I received a couple bracelets and I really like the matter in which they were made. They are all unique in their own special way. There are several types of bracelets you can check out. So far, there are 14 different collections. Like the image below says, every bracelet purchased helps provide full time jobs for local artisans in Costa Rica.

The idea for this business came from a trip to Costa Rica by two friends from Southern California.

During a visit to a small community in Costa Rica, they crossed paths with two men named Jorge and Joaquin who were peddling bracelets on the street. The colorful bracelets were handmade in a simple way that seemed to capture the essence of their journey. When they first met Jorge and Joaquin, they were living in a single room with three beds shared by several other members of their family. Seeing this, Paul and Griffin asked them if they would be willing to make 400 bracelets to take back to the United States with them. Jorge was delighted to make such a sell, and the guys were thrilled to help them out, but to everyone's good fortune, soon after returning to the states their friendship blossomed into a full-fledged business relationship. For more on their story, click here.

Not only do they sell bracelets, you can buy a number of things from Pura Vida. Keychains, beanies, snapbacks, hair ties, iPhone cases, festival bags and some home decor items. One of their collections is called Charity Collections. For instance, Animal Awareness is one of them. The bracelets for that line are $5 a pop and they are just as nice as the rest. You know I'm all over that one haha!

Check out Pura Vida when you get a chance and if you see something you like, use my code --> AREED10 to receive 10% off!! Help folks in need by purchasing a fantastic product that you'll enjoy!

Weekend Snapshots

I had a productive weekend, some what. I found legit looking casas to rent. Saw a few in person (the outside) and checked them off my list. Its important that the next house we live in looks nice and safe at all hours of the day and night. Some of those looked straight hood. No can do. We also need a backyard, a big one for my big kids. Jay's not much of a perimeter runner but Remidog sure is. He'll definitely enjoy a bigger backyard. Side Note: I'm so in love with my new Kate Spade planner..
