dia de los muertos 2011..

dia de los muertos 2011, ca, a set on Flickr.
Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in many cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it attains the quality of a National Holiday, and all banks are closed. The celebration takes place on November 1–2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. i was in cali for this years dia de los muertos.  rain invited me to attend the santa ana’s 9th annual noches de altares with her family. the only other event that i had attended to celebrate dia de los muertos was in houston at the lawndale art center, so i most def had to take her up on the invite.
the altares had many different themes. some to honor grandparents, kids, military, immigrants, etc.
what i liked most about this event was all the colors..and how unique everyone looked. def a great night!
visit my flickr to see the pics from that night.
..till next time ;]
